During the last six months since the last general meeting in October, the project planning committee confirmed that the Canadian Chapter would go ahead and equip the science labs by themselves. The New York Executive Board had approved an $8,000 contribution for this project. But since the Canadians came forward with their proposal, the Project Planning Committee is asking that this $8,000 which was earmarked for equipping the science labs with needed science materials be applied to refurbishing the basketball court which will cost $12,000. The New York Board had already approved $4,000 last year for this project that is now on hold in the BOG’s bank account. The BOG has sent a revised quote through Kenrick Thomas for $12,000. A proposal for the remaining $8,000 was forwarded to the Executive Board. However, the Executive Board has requested that Project Planning Committee obtains another quote from Guyana before the additional $8,000 is transferred to the BOG account. Cathy Hughes of the BOG is working to obtain the second quote.
Mary Ferreira will be in Guyana in April and will bring the second quote back to New York upon her return if it is available. She will also visit the school to follow-up on Simone Jordan-McBean’s report.
All receipts for the custodian’s salary have been received to date.
Ms. Simone Jordan-McBean attended Prize Giving in November 2008. The standard award of $2,775 was disbursed to students. Simone was able to obtain all signatures from students and has submitted a report.
Smithsonian magazines, donated by alumni, were shipped to the school through Maxine Baburam and Mary Ferreira.
As you know, with the Executive Board’s approval and your continued support to fund-raising projects, we have disbursed the subsidy for the IT teacher of $1,200 and subsidized the custodian’s fee of $3,000.
Due to the worldwide financial crisis, the decision to approach foundations for funding to refurbish the library and Industrial Arts room was put on hold.
Again, we wish to thank our membership and fund-raising committees for their effective work to provide the funds needed for this essential work.
A special thank you also goes to our Executive Board for considering our proposals.
