ST. ROSE'S HIGH SCHOOL
BOARD OF GOVERNORS

board

Objective of the Board:
To work towards the efficient management of the school for the educational, moral and relevant developmental skills of the students, in collaboration with the government, the Alumni Associations in Guyana and abroad, and the local and international community.

Pursuant to the President's College Act 1990 of the Government of Guyana, effective July 1, 2005, a Board of Governors has been established to manage St. Rose's High School. This means that the new Board will have the authority to supervise repairs to the school building, fill faculty vacancies through its Appointments Committee, and cooperate with international and local chapters to implement and complete projects as needed. All Board members were either past pupils or faculty members of St. Rose's at one time or another.

The Board is currently studying the Act which gives it extraordinarily wide powers and responsibilities. The recent reunion in New York gave the New York and Canadian Chapters a chance to meet board members Catherine Hughes, Enrico Woolford and Nicholas McLean. They presented a videotape to some 130 alumni highlighting the school compound and its current deplorable condition. Needless to say, everyone was speechless after seeing the videotape.

Members are fully supporting the Board in its struggle to refurbish St. Rose's High School in order to make it a place of learning where students will be able to excel and show respect for their environment. The Board has already started work to make the school a somewhat "new school" as students return for the new school year 2005-2006 in September.

The New York Chapter, with agreement from Board and Project Planning Committee members, has already transferred US$3,000 to establish running water to the Marian wing facilities. Tressles, overhead water tanks, and the replacement of pipes will be undertaken so that children are not without water as was the case last year. The Canadian Chapter will fund a similar project in the library and computer room wing as soon as estimates are received from the Board of Governors.

The Board has also spearheaded a massive clean-up project - removal of garbage, weeding and restoration of the rose garden, scrubbing and painting of walls. The G$9 million from the Government will fund repairs to the wooden building which houses St. Agnes and some areas of St. Rose's such as the auditorium and technical drawing rooms.

We look forward to your support in helping us rebuild our Alma Mater.
